A pair of orphaned ducklings at Wild ARC in Metchosin are in need of some clean bedding.

Orphaned ducklings need some nesting and the Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Metchosin is calling on the community to help.

Wild ARC is open 365 days a year to help sick, injured and orphaned wild animals on southern Vancouver Island. The centre treated 2,132 animals last year from across the Capital Region.

A handful of the young fowl came into BC SPCA Wild ARC care recently, and rely on layers of soft clean bedding for comfort and padding during healing.

“Right now, we are in urgent need of white and light-coloured pillowcases,” the wildlife agency pleaded on social media. “These pillowcases are essential for providing the best care and comfort to our patients as they recover and prepare for release back into the wild.”

Anyone with extra to spare can drop items off at 1020 Malloch Rd. from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. any day of the week.

The baby ducks were confirmed orphaned, but BC SPCA reminds residents that not all young animals left alone are abandoned. The agency is just winding down its busiest wildlife season, April through September, when more than 70 per cent of patients are admitted during the baby frenzy of spring and summer.

Anyone who finds an injured or young animal and has concerns can call the BC SPCA Animal Helpline at 1-855-622-7722 for advice.
