Friday

The Canada West fall swimming championship schedule wraps up this weekend, as the Victoria Vikes host the 2017 CW Swimming Championships at Saanich Commonwealth Place. The first session starts Friday at 4 p.m. with finals Friday slated for 5:30 to 7 p.m. The weekend ends with final heats from 3 to 5 p.m.on Sunday. Swimmers come from the universities of Alberta, Calgary, Lethbridge, Manitoba, Regina, Thompson Rivers, Victoria and UBC.

The Victoria Grizzlies host Movember Hockey Heroes Friday when they take on the Nanaimo Clippers at The Q Centre at 7 p.m. Two Grizzlies fans could win $10,000 in the Shoot to Win for men’s health contest at the game. Fans can donate and enter to win until the end of the second period. Two lucky people will be chosen in a random draw to compete in the contest during the second intermission. The Grizzlies will also auction off their game-worn men’s health jerseys, sponsored by Island Savings. Half of the proceeds from the jerseys auction will go toward supporting men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and their families.

The Victoria Royals host the Seattle Thunderbirds for a pair of Western Hockey League games at 7:05 p.m. tonight and Saturday. Friday’s game also features the kickoff to a fundraiser for the Gord Downie/Chanie Wenjack Fund, which promotes inclusion and furthering the conversation around Indigenous issues in Canada.

Saturday

The Friends of the Greater Victoria Public Library is holding its annual fall book sale at Pearkes Recreation Centre, 3100 Tillicum Rd behind Tillicum shopping centre.The sale starts with an early-bird sale, for $5 admission, Saturday afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. On Sunday the sale is free to enter from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with prices as marked. At 1:15 p.m., the sale advances to a take-what-you-can $10 entry, books are free. Proceeds support GVPL programs and services.

The Holy Rollers’ famous apple pie is back this weekend only (famous in Cadboro Bay, at least). The pies, which are sold frozen, are a much sought after part of Saturday’s St. George’s Anglican Church Christmas Bazaar, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. George’s Anglican Church, 3909 St. George’s Ln.

Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign launch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Uptown Town Plaza Square featuring entertainment, sports and political celebrities. With a goal of raising $225,000 locally and $4 million provincially, for the next six weeks the iconic red kettles will line the streets in communities across the province. Get your photo taken with some local celebrities, enjoy some hot chocolate, take in the holiday festivities and make a difference in the lives of others in our community.

The 36th annual Island Farms Santa’s Light Parade gets underway at 4:45 p.m. on Government Street at the Inner Harbour. Experience the magic in downtown Victoria with floats, bands, entertainment and lots of fun for the whole family. The parade moves north up to Centennial Square and the McPherson Playhouse. Early events begin at 4 p.m. and Santa will light up the square following the parade at 6:58 p.m. Donations at the event will go to support the Mustard Seed Food Bank.

UVic Jazz Ensemble presents a live soundtrack to the 1926 Buster Keaton classic film “The General.” More than a concert, this is an immersive and interactive experience in sound and vision. 8 p.m. at UVic’s Phillip T. Young Recital Hall. Tickets are $20, $15 for seniors and $10 for students and UVic alumni. Please consider bringing a non-perishable donation for the UVic Campus Food Bank.

Sunday

The Fleet Diving Unit (Pacific) is hosting its annual Turkey Run with a five kilometre or 10 km trail run at Thetis Lake Regional Park. The event gets underway at 8 a.m. at the main beach with interactive displays for those not running.

Oh Deer from noon to 3 p.m. at Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary. A celebration of all the members of the deer family with deer bingo, deer crafts, deer games, and lots of touchable deer items. Admission by donation.

Light Up Oak Bay with kids games, live entertainment and food vendors from 2 to 8 p.m. on Oak Bay Avenue. Santa arrives after the lights go on at 5.

String Chamber Concert – Featuring UVic School of Music string students from the chamber music class of the Lafayette String Quartet. 8 p.m. at UVic’s Phillip T. Young Recital Hall. Admission by donation.
