A dozen years in, smiles return to cookie sheets across Greater Victoria to help keep families together in times of medical crisis.
The Tim Hortons’ Smile Cookie campaign that first dates back to 1996, kicks off April 28 raising money for the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island for the 12th consecutive year.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Tim Hortons franchisees and customers for their support over the past decade,” foundation CEO Veronica Carroll said in a news release. “Proceeds from the sale of more than 300,000 cookies have raised enough to pay for 2,275 overnight stays at Jeneece Place.”
From April 28 to May 4, proceeds from Smile Cookies sold at 22 participating Tim Hortons restaurants across the Capital Regional District will support Jeneece Place. The campaign has raised more than $512,000 for the foundation since 2014.
Those funds help provide welcoming, low-cost accommodation for Island families who need to travel to Greater Victoria for a child’s health care. Since opening in 2012, Jeneece Place has provided more than 3,000 families with a place to stay in a time of stress.
“This is truly amazing – for each of these nights, a family was able to be steps from their child in the hospital, focused on their health instead of where they were going to sleep,” Carroll said.
