Rain or shine residents can usher in good health with the annual wassail at Sea Cider in Central Saanich.
Wassail day is the tradition of waking the trees and blessing the orchard for a successful harvest season. The word "wassail" comes from the Old English phrase "waes hael" meaning "good health."
On this day, orchards in different cider regions sing songs, drink cider, and make noise to ward off evil spirits and encourage a fruitful crop.
In Central Saanich, the Sea Cider Farmhouse and Cidery celebrates with a free event on Feb. 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The day features festivities, activities, and delights ranging from artisan vendors to hot soup and churros.
Performances are on tap from locals Clanna Morna and the Morris Dancers + Mummers Play. Quicksbottom Morris and Island Thyme Morris make their final winter performances at 12:30 p.m. leading into the orchard blessing at 1 p.m. Island Thyme Morris performs the Flamborough longsword dance at 2:15 p.m.
Clanna Morna has a sound rooted in traditional Irish, Scottish and English music focused on telling the stories of those less fortunate throughout history – the rebels, underdogs, women, and queer people whose voices were silenced. Comprised of an ensemble of multi-instrumentalists, the band has been arranging and performing traditional Celtic and original music together since 2020.
The event at 2487 Mt. St. Michael Rd. in Central Saanich also includes a free creative craft station for kids of all ages, and a make-your-own-wish tree. All ages are welcome, including dogs on-leash.
