Kicking off Friday (May 9) the Kulea Culture Society presents a three-day film festival in Victoria celebrating Canadians with roots across the Asian continent.

Stories From the Silk Roads runs from May 9 to 11. It will host a curated selection of feature films and short films by Asian and Asian-Canadian filmmakers.

The festival launches Friday at Caffe Fantastico in Quadra Village from 7 to 9 p.m. The evening event will feature a "fusion of sounds as artists experiment with diverse musical traditions and share stories that bridge cultures," the press release said. Tickets are available at the door on a sliding scale of $5 to $15.

From May 10 to 11, films will be screened at The Vic Theatre at 808 Douglas St. Highlights include A First Farewell, an experimental debut unveiling the poetry of Uighur life in Xinjiang, Yellow Cat, a darkly comic tale of an ex-con's dream to build a movie theatre in the mountains, and Dead Pigs, a satirical look at modernizing Shanghai through intersecting lives.

A bundle of short films by Asian-Canadian independent filmmakers will be screened on May 11 at 5:30 p.m. These films explore themes of identity, cultural heritage and personal narratives.

Tickets  are available at kuleaculturesociety.org.
