Five things to do in Greater Victoria this weekend

Sunny beaches, fast cars and Latin music – who could ask for anything more?

The long weekend’s almost here and that’s a perfect reason to get out and enjoy all that Greater Victoria has to offer. Whether you have visitors coming from off the Island or are just looking for something to celebrate, here are five things worth checking out this weekend.

Get your tech on – Wonderment Festival fills Victoria-area parks with ambient electronic and electro-acoustic music over the B.C. Day Weekend. Free events are scheduled for Fishermen’s Wharf Park starting at 7 p.m. Friday (Aug. 4), at Songhees Park Plaza at the foot of the Johnson Street Bridge starting at 7 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 5), and beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 6) at the Cameron Bandshell in Beacon Hill Park. Ticketed events go Friday night at the Capital Ballroom, and Saturday and Sunday night at the Victoria Event Centre. See the full schedule at wonderment.ca.

A treat for Latin lovers – Viva! Victoria Latin Fest showcases the best in Latin American culture and talent in Victoria’s Centennial Square Aug. 5 and 6. The free event features live music, dance, food, cultural activities and more. Everything gets going at noon both Saturday and Sunday.

Rev up your engine – Torquemasters Auto Extravaganza will line Sidney’s Beacon Avenue with close to 400 cars, trucks and motorcycles. The show, which stretches from Beacon Avenue all the way down to the pier, runs Sunday (Aug. 6) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A day at the beach – The Cadboro Bay Festival offers the perfect picturesque site for a picnic on the beach. While there will be no sandcastle competition this year, the event running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 6) at Cadboro-Gyro Park, will feature live music, three-legged races, potato sack races, face painting, kids crafts and displays.

Shop local – The Highlands Market returns to Head to Caleb Pike Heritage Park (1589 Millstream Rd.) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 6). Check out the locally made and grown veggies, berries, soaps, wood products, sculpture, jewelry, clothing and more.
