Food Day Canada showcases Victoria's local foods this weekend

August 3 is a day to celebrate Canada's producers, processors, chefs, researchers and home cooks.

A grassroots movement is bringing local food to life this Saturday, Aug. 3 at Sol Fine Foods in Victoria.

Food Day Canada was created to inspire people to shop, cook and dine Canadian. It originally started as the World's Longest Barbecue by Anita Stewart, her family and volunteers, to show support for Canada's beef farmers and ranchers. The mission evolved to promote the growth and study of Canadian food culture.

In honour of the day, Sol Fine Foods and the Island Chefs Collaborative (ICC) will serve up a chef-prepared lunch featuring some of Vancouver Island's top food producers. Tickets are $20.

The event is co-hosted by the Mustard Seed, Flourish School Food Society, the ICC and Vancouver Island's Food Day Canada committee.

Food will be sourced from Vancouver Island producers, including Saanich Organics, Dan's Farm and Michell's Farm. The menu features barbecue, Stick in the Mud Coffee, Berryman Brothers Farm's meat, craft beer from Hoyne, Phillips, Driftwood and wine from Enrico, Unsworth and Averill Creek. There will also be house-made kombucha and lemonade.

For kids, there will be an interactive workshop by Flourish School Food Society.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the event.
