The Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) officially launched its streaming music collection on Saturday at the Langford Heritage Branch.

The collection itself features more than 132,000 albums and two million tracks. Genres include world, jazz, pop and rock. The program also features composer biographies, a glossary of musical terms, opera libretti and synopses.

Daphne Wood, director of communications and development with GVPL said there is also a partnership with Pacific Opera.

“We are going to add access to our culture and recreation program which already exists in 2018 so that people will be able to go and attend the opera if they have a library card,” she said. “They can borrow that as part of our pass program.”

Woods said the streaming service came through an anonymous donor who wanted to share their love of music with Greater Victoria.

“We were delighted when they expressed an interest,” she said. “Anybody in the community can enjoy this collection. It’s not something that you have to cue up for or wait for access for, you can just enjoy it.”

Those that want a library card to access the streaming service can go into a branch get a card or also visit the GVPL’s website and get a library card online. All you need to access the streaming service is your library card number and your password.

Wood said the library will have the subscription service for two years. They will then evaluate how the community felt about the subscription. So far, Wood said the public has expressed excitement over the new service.

“Extremely happy,” she said. “We’ve never been able to offer a selection as diverse and deep as this one. This is a first for us.”
