Helen Waldstein's family barely escaped Czechoslovakia in 1939 as the Nazi grip tightened on Europe.
Her family received heartbreaking letters from friends and relatives throughout the war while safe on a southern Ontario farm, but it wasn't until Waldstein re-read the letters as an adult that she realized their significance.
Those stories will be recounted from her latest book, Letters from the Lost, on Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. at Congregation Emanu-El synagogue, 1461 Blanshard St. Admission is by donation.
