Park improvements will begin sometime in 2024, with a finalized improvement plan set to be done by the end of this year. The project largely relies on community feedback and needs, and public response will shape the design. (Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen)

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is launching a new project to improve parks and recreational spaces for the Trinity and Creighton Valley communities.

Dubbed the Electoral Area ‘D’ Master Plan, the district will be providing a more comprehensive blueprint of what’s in the works and will seek public feedback on its initiatives.

Areas of focus for the project are to include sustainability, community needs and building on cultural and natural assets, according to the district’s webpage.

“Culture refers to how the parks are used and what they look like, for example, the potential for interpretive signage, events, art etc. Inclusivity refers to the accessibility and multigenerational aspects when planning parks,” said Kyle Gabelhei, the district’s project coordinator.

The district is planning on involving the public by hosting open house events and an interactive project page online, as well as a public opinion survey.

Open houses will include poster boards for suggestions, open discussions and interactive games, Gabelhei said.

The first open house event will be held on Thursday, July 6, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. in the Okanagan Falls Elementary School gymnasium, and anyone and everyone is invited to come and provide feedback.

The survey will open the following day on July 7, and be available online until Aug. 4. Paper copies to be mailed in will be available upon request, and can be picked up on July 7 at either the district’s office or the Okanagan Falls Recreation Centre.

In terms of a project timeline, there is a plan to host a second open house in the fall with more conceptual designs, with a finalized plan expected to be developed by the end of 2023.
