Langford scouts craft toys for Greater Victoria animal rescue

14th Juan de Fuca Beaver Scouts learn about empathy, giving back

Tails are wagging at Broke Promises Rescue thanks to a handful of boys with the 14th Juan de Fuca Beaver Scouts and their year-end community project.

Faced with finding something to earn credit towards Scouts Canada's Top Section Award for Beavers, the North Star Award, the kids aged 5 to 7 decided to make toys for the Greater Victoria animal rescue.

“The kids came together and they said they wanted to make dog toys for homeless animals,” said leader Ryan Swan. “They all donated odds and ends like socks, ropes and tennis balls. They made dog toys and cat toys and also raised $27 for Broken Promises Rescue.”

The local non-profit is an all-species rescue doing work with B.C. shelters for more than 25 years.

Through the exercise, the kids had a good time building toys and learning about empathy and giving back to the community, Swan said. Seven scouts earned the North Star Award.
