Memories of motoring history: Oak Bay celebrates 25th Collector Car Festival

More than 20,000 car enthusiasts attend, with 300 vehicles from all eras and corners of the globe on display

Chrome, big engines, and thousands of car enthusiasts filled Oak Bay Avenue on July 13 for the 25th Oak Bay Collector Car Festival, celebrating more than a century of automotive history.

From the legendary 1923 Ford Model T to modern Italian supercars, more than 300 vehicles lined a five-block stretch for all to see.

For co-organizer and car collector Chris Gannon, the event is about honouring the world’s rich motoring history.

“Vintage cars are a part of our culture,” he said. “We enjoy restoring them, maintaining them, driving them, and we like to show them to the community. It’s been going for generations, and I can't expect it to be any different anytime soon.”

Launched in the early 2000s by the late Ken Agate of Oak Bay, the event aims to carry on his legacy, Gannon said.

Now one of the largest car shows on Vancouver Island, the festival draws more than 20,000 visitors to the one-day event, which stretches from Mitchell Street to Monterey Avenue.
