A local nonprofit organization that has been providing free grocery markets to those in need has added a new seventh market location in South Victoria.

The new Living Edge Neighbourhood Market is located at Church of Our Lord at 626 Blanshard St. and offers a farmers-market-style lineup that includes an abundance of options pending availability such as fresh produce, yogurt, bread, milk and even sushi. Visitors who are struggling to afford groceries line up along Blanshard Street starting at 10:30 a.m. and once inside, get the chance to fill up their bags with items of their choice.

The market runs every Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon, while supplies last.

Visitors are asked to bring a reusable bag suitable to carry food in and no registration nor proof of income is required.

Bryan Wilson, treasurer of Church of Our Lord and volunteer with Living Edge, said the new market, which is now in its third week of operation, is making a positive impact while growing steadily. The second week saw lineups of around 40 people, and he estimates it will eventually serve an average of around 150.

“We definitely welcome donations because the need is great, and the numbers grow every year. Especially in recent months, Living Edge has seen the lineups grow considerably,” Wilson said.

Living Edge takes donations online through the Living Edge website. Tax receipts are issued upon donation.
