A Tree of Kindness sprouted on the wall near the Dave Dunnet Community Theatre this morning to kick off three days of spreading kindness. As the day progresses it will fill with messages of kindness.
“One of the biggest things I find important about Anti-Bullying Day, is promoting kindness and not just always saying ‘don’t bully don’t bully’,” says Leah Smith, a leadership student at Oak Bay High School. “The whole point of the tree is we’re going to fill them up with a bunch of notes and stuff that students have written, about what kindness means to them or how they show kindness.”
The pink leaves penned by individual students share the messages with all who walk the halls.
“I think it will be really interesting because it will be a big display and it’s also while we have our school musical going on,” Smith says. “So a lot of the public will be able to see it as well which is even better.”
Tuesday students hosted a pink bake sale to raise money for the Pink Shirt Day foundation to support anti bullying
“Wednesday we’re going to have our most pink contest,” Smith said. Someone will win a teddy bear wearing pink. Also that day, the high school students will share the kindness of Kindergarteners.
“There’s going to be 100 Kindergarteners that come here on Wednesday and we’re going to exchange kindness gifts with them for Pink Shirt Day,” said leadership student Annika Weir, while tying 100 friendship knots this morning in preparation for the Feb. 28 event.
