Ken Kieley is wading into internet waters in hopes of reunification after finding a GoPro camera on the seabed off Victoria during a weekend dive.
Avid scuba divers both locally and abroad, Kieley and his wife were off Ogden Point Jan. 26 when he spotted a wayward GoPro.
“We were basically between the first and second bend at about 30 feet. I was scuba diving along looking for fish and octopus and saw this camera,” he said.
He grabbed it, took it home and took it apart.
The camera had been flooded, but the memory card was in good enough shape to show videos, no still shots, dating as far back as 2016.
He grabbed some stills images from the videos and shared them on social media pages dedicated to B.C. and Victoria snorkelers in hopes of finding the owner.
“I know what it’s like to lose gear,” the Metchosin resident said.
The couple has had success before. They found a camera while diving off Saxe Point six months ago and mentioned it to the staff at Wilson’s Diving. Someone there recalled another patron mentioning losing a camera and that one got back to its rightful owner within a couple of days.
The latest footage on the GoPro found Sunday is from May 12, 2024, likely the day it fell. The video shows what appears to be a man and woman diving, with him sporting the camera.
It shows the camera falling through the waters, then about eight minutes of seafloor.
Kieley snagged photos of a couple individuals and a shot of the man’s fins, in hopes he’d recognize them.
