PHOTOS: Elk Lake Triathlon sees increase in participation

Over 400 athletes registered this year

Participants broke a sweat while having a blast during the 2023 Elk Lake Triathlon.

The race started and finished at Hamsterly Beach with athletes swimming in Elk Lake, cycling along the Saanich Peninsula and running on the Elk Lake trails Sunday (Aug. 6).

“This is an amazing local event,” Dynamic Race Events owner and organizer Angie Woodhead said. “It’s really a privilege to be here. My favourite of the course is the run around the lake.”

Dynamic Race Events produces the Elk Lake Triathlon, which replaced the Self Transcendence Triathlon in 2017.

“We wanted to carry on the tradition of having a triathlon on the August long weekend followed by pancakes,” Woodhead said.

Central Saanich Lions Club members served the pancake breakfast during the event.

James Lorenzen finished in first place in the men’s standard individual race with a time of 2:18:09. Brit Cooper was the first woman to cross the finish line with a time of 2:30:02.

Over 400 athletes registered this year.

“Our registration is up this year,” Woodhead added. “It’s great to see it rounding back up and everyone is thrilled to be back racing. It’s excellent to have the community back this up. There are all types of athletes and fitness levels. Some of these people only do one race a year and this is the one they do. There are also some super fast speedsters and some professionals. The athletes who support us every year are amazing.”
