Sand sculpture wooes audiences

A large crowd gathered at Esquimalt’s Gorge Park Pavilion this weekend for a Mad Hatter tea party and picnic.

The Township Community Arts Council put on the event, which featured games, food and live music from Victoria songstress Stephanie Greaves.

“The community spirit in Esquimalt is certainly being showcased today,” Township Community Arts Council founder and president Morlene Tomlinson said. “This is just amazing. We almost can’t believe it. This has been really well received by the community.”

The arts council obtained Mad Hatter costumes from the Victoria Operatic Society. Prizes were also given out to some people who wore great costumes.

“Esquimalt likes to dress up and this a great opportunity to do that,” Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins said. “We’re having a lot of fun. This is fantastic.”

Attendees were also able to see an impressive Mad Hatter sand sculpture.

“It took five days to create,” said sculptor Scott Gillies, who helped make the sculpture. “It was an awesome experience. I’m so excited to see so many people put here to see it.”

This was the first event of its kind in the community. Tomlinson said the tea party and picnic were so great that she hopes the arts council will be able to put it on again.
