Postal workers will be arriving at your doorstep this weekend ready to fight hunger.
The 14th annual Greater Victoria Postie Food Drive happens Saturday (May 28).
Non-perishable food collected by more than 200 postal workers will support four food banks from Sooke to Sidney, including the Mustard Seed food bank, which feeds about 7,000 people a month in Victoria.
“Kids use the food bank,” said letter carrier Lucie Hulford, who is co-ordinating the drive in Victoria and Esquimalt. “It’s too bad. (The food bank) shouldn’t be needed, but it is.”
Last year’s drive generated 39,000 pounds of food and $950 in cash.
“We have a lot of committed letter carriers,” said Brent Palmer, Mustard Seed food bank director. “They clearly understand.”
Residents are asked to place non-perishable food donations at their door on Saturday (May 28) before 9 a.m., when the drive starts. Cash donations can be given directly to postal workers.
Alternatively, food can be dropped off at grocery store receptacles or at food banks.
