The BC SPCA wild animal rehab in Metchosin hosts a gaze of rambunctious young raccoons in need of nature's play structures.
Perfectly timed with the return of the rains and those engaging in fall pruning, Wild Animal Rescue Centre (ARC) issued a callout on social media for fresh greenery for its young raccoons.
“This lively group uses the greenery to practise climbing and other vital skills as they prepare for release back into the wild. The greenery also provides important cover and hiding spots, helping them feel more secure during their stay with us,” Wild ARC said in a post.
The centre is looking for greenery donations by the truckload – specifically seven- to 10-foot branches the raccoons can climb on as well as smaller cedar and fir pieces for the smaller patients.
Donations can be dropped off at 1020 Malloch Rd. from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. any day of the week.
The raccoons are also among the current wildlife stars of the critter cam streaming online at spca.bc.ca/programs-services/wildlife-rehabilitation/wild-arc-critter-cam.
While open 365 days a year to injured and sick wildlife, Wild ARC has always been closed to the public. Anyone who finds a wild animal in distress should contact the B.C. SPCA provincial call centre at 1-855-622-7722 for advice.
