Kindness became a focus for students in Ruth King Elementary School for an extended week-long celebration of Pink Shirt Day.
Grade 5 leadership students expressed gratitude at the various school-wide activities that gave them the chance to spread compassion.
Leadership student Hana Nozawa said she wore her pink shirt because “that means to stop bullying and show we’re supporting anti-bullying.”

On one day, students were randomly assigned to another student and given a heart-shaped cutout where they wrote compliments for each other. They could send each other a candy gram for another.
Students were given kindness tickets by their teacher when a kindness was performed for someone else.
Volunteer leadership students helped change bulletin boards and clean and organize supplies. The final day, which was also Pink Shirt Day, classes presented short skits, songs or poems that reflected on “caring” and “connecting” with others.
“Every time we do it I feel even more like everyone joins in, every year it just seems to enhance more,” said leadership student Brooke McLain.
