The Victoria Conservatory of Music has invited the public to attend a special event on Sept. 27 to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Ry Moran, a member of the Red River Metis and a founding member of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation at the University of Manitoba, will be appearing to share his personal perspectives, gained through his work with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the National Centre.

“The Victoria Conservatory is looking forward to hosting this insightful event during the lead-up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This event will also mark the beginning of a relationship between the Victoria Conservatory of Music and Ry Moran, who will be supporting the Conservatory through a guest faculty appointment in Music and Reconciliation,” said CEO Nathan Medd.

“Ry’s passion for teaching, arts and music is abundant. His commitment to the principles of truth and reconciliation is unwavering.”

Moran returned to his alma mater, the University of Victoria, in 2020 to serve as the associate university librarian for reconciliation.

He has produced and hosted a podcast, Taapwavwin (which means truth in the language of the Metis), in which he explores the “intersection of power, memory and human rights,” according to Moran.

The conservatory is counting on Moran to help celebrate the role of music in advancing the cause of truth and reconciliation while exploring the responsibilities and implications of the concept for organizations like the conservatory.

“How we run and operate major public institutions is absolutely at the heart of truth and reconciliation,” said Moran in a 2020 interview.

Beyond his work with truth and reconciliation, Moran is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who will perform a few of his original songs at the Sept. 27 event.

Admission to see Moran is free of charge to those who have accessed an RSVP ticket at https://www.showpass.com/ry-moran-from-truth-to-reconciliation/

The event will take place at the Victoria Conservatory of Music’s Alix Goolden Performance Hall. (Entrance at 900 Johnson St.)
