Saanich is reopening the Beckwith Park splash pad for a few days. The Rutledge Park splash pad is seen in this photo.

Families will get to use the Beckwith Park splash pad over the weekend before it closes again so Saanich can study whether the site is impacting downstream areas.

The splash pad will operate for its usual hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Saturday (Aug. 10) to Monday (Aug. 12).

Saanich shut down the splash pads at Rutledge and Beckwith parks on July 19 after equipment issues were identified at both sites. The district said last month that potable water was entering the storm drain system, which could impact aquatic life downstream.

There are no health concerns associated with the water features, Saanich said in a Thursday update. The weekend reopening will allow the district to collect water samples downstream as it looks to better understand whether aquatic life is being impacted.

"Results will help inform staff as they continue to pursue short- and long-term solutions to get the splash pad up and running normally again," Saanich said.

The splash pad's water volume may be reduced during the testing period.

The district says the Rutledge splash facility now remains open on a weather-dependent basis.
