The broad-winged hawk is a target species at the Sept. 27 bird walk through Uplands Park in Oak Bay.

A monthly meeting of ornithologists explores birding hotspot Cattle Point and Uplands Park on Friday (Sept. 27).

The bit of birders’ paradise off the corner of Oak Bay regularly provides rarities for longtime-birders and newcomers.

Led by Geoffrey Newell, Friends of Uplands Park volunteer and expert birder, the walks are known for revealing the unexpected, having documented a female orchard oriole, rare to the region last November.

Greater Victoria is home to a rich selection of migratory and resident birds and known as a prime place in Canada for hosting rare species.

Newell, passionate birder since childhood, also leads others – alongside his brother Jean – with birdwatching course "Birding with the Brothers" on Thursday evenings at Monterey Recreation Centre this fall.

The educational and interactive course includes seven classroom sessions –  learning how to identify birds by plumage, shape, behaviour, flight style, vocalizations and more – followed by a field trip to one of Greater Victoria's top birding hotspots.

The monthly walk through the Friends of Uplands Park is Sept. 27 at 9 a.m.; meeting at the main parking lot of Cattle Point.
