Victoria’s Congregation Emanu-El, one of the country’s oldest synagogues, is celebrating its 150th year with public tours led by Canada’s first ordained maggidah (female storyteller), Shoshana Litman.
The tour touches on the history of Jewish-Canadians from Victoria, who included the first Jewish judge in Canada, first Jewish mayor in British North America and the first Jew elected to the House of Commons.
The tours run from June to August, from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays and 8 p.m. on Sundays in July. Children under 12 are free, adult admission is $10. For more information, call 250-382-0615 or visit congregationemanu-el.ca/community/synagogue-tours/.
