A new park is coming to a block along a major Victoria roadway after the city purchased two properties to make way for the green space.
The $11-million purchase of the two properties along Blanshard Street, between Fisgard and North Park streets, was funded by the city’s reserves established for acquiring land for parks and open spaces.
The new park will be accessible to all ages and abilities and will provide valuable green space, new trees and space for recreation, the city said.
“A new downtown park will boost quality of life for downtown residents and add vibrancy to our core,” said Mayor Marianne Alto in a news release. “These properties represent a strategic investment in our community, intentionally aligning with council’s objectives to expand green spaces and recreational facilities for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
The park will be on the site that includes a former Romeo’s restaurant location and is situated in what the city called a rapidly growing urban area. Several proposals that would bring in new residents to the northern part of downtown are currently in the approval pipeline.
The timing of the park’s development will be determined over the coming year. Victoria has been seeking opportunities to increase parks and green spaces in areas experiencing high population growth for several years, said Deputy city manager Thomas Soulliere.
“This future park will provide a welcoming new open place in the heart of the city for people to play, relax and enjoy nature,” he said.
