A memorial mass will be held in Victoria Friday evening to honour Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, at the age of 88.
The service will take place at St. Andrew’s Cathedral (740 View St) on Friday, April 25, at 7 p.m.
The Most Reverend Gary Gordon, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria, will lead the mass, and the community is invited to join.
Gordon spoke of Pope Francis' profound impact on the world, noting that the late pontiff led with a heart "modelled after Christ’s own," calling people to walk together in faith, hope, and love.
"His papacy was one of encounter, listening, and dialogue, urging us to care for our common home, to foster fraternity and social friendship, and to walk the path of reconciliation with humility and sincerity," Gordon said in a letter.
The bishop also reflected on the Pope’s advocacy for uplifting the marginalized and oppressed.
"His witness of faith, his tireless commitment to justice and mercy, and his humble service to the people of god have left an indelible mark on the Church and the world," Gordon said.
The memorial mass in Victoria will give the community a chance to reflect on the Pope’s enduring legacy. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be available for viewing online via their YouTube page.
The following day, Pope Francis’ funeral service in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City, will take place at 1 a.m. PDT on April 26. The Vatican News YouTube channel will also provide a livestream of the funeral.
