The memorial mass will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2 at St. Andrew's Cathedral.

A memorial mass will be held on Friday, May 2, at St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Victoria to honour the victims of the recent tragedy at the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver.

The service follows a violent attack that claimed multiple lives, left many others injured, and sent shockwaves through communities across British Columbia.

In response, the provincial government has declared May 2 a day of remembrance and mourning for the victims.

“As people learn more about the victims, they are also learning that the victims’ loss is felt deeply across the province,” reads an information bulletin from the province. “This tragedy has had a profound impact on the Filipino community in B.C., and on many others in Vancouver and throughout the province.”

Bishop Gordon hopes the mass will serve as a space for unity and reflection – offering an opportunity for the community to come together in shared sorrow and spiritual support.

"I pray for those who lost their lives, for those who were injured, and for all who witnessed such devastating violence," Gordon said. "In moments like this, when sorrow and confusion weigh so heavily on our hearts, we are called to stand together in faith, lifting one another up in prayer and in love."

He also offered words of compassion and solidarity for those left grieving.

"Please know that you are not alone in your grief. Our Diocese stands with you," Gordon added. "My heart goes out to all the victims of the tragic events at the Lapu-Lapu festival in Vancouver, and to their grieving families and loved ones.

The mass, which is open to all, will take place at 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, located at 740 View St.

The Most Reverend Gary Gordon, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria, will preside over the service, with Father Dino Villadiego delivering the homily.
