The City of Victoria officially opened a new accessible playground at Stadacona Park on Saturday (Oct. 28).

The design of the playground was informed by community input as it includes a range of low-barrier play features for children of all ages and abilities.

Accessible play elements at the site include a ride-on wheelchair swing, a disc swing, a chair swing and a chair spinner – all on an accessible rubberized surface.

The play spot also features a tall tower with slides and climbers, swings, an in-ground trampoline, spinners and springers. A gently sloping mound within the play area provides an accessible route to the lower landing in the tower, which features activity panels and a small slide, the city said.

“There’s excitement and anticipation about this amazing new accessible playground,” Mayor Marianne Alto said in a statement. “This playground is a celebration of fun for kids of all ages and abilities. We’re not just building play structures; together we are building an inclusive, compassionate, welcoming community for everyone.”

The city said the new playground hopes to encourage creative play within a lush greenspace that has mature trees and garden beds.

An accessible parking space was also added on Stadacona Avenue as part of the project.

The city said it will be working to restore the natural areas in the park by planting native trees, shrubs and flowers that support local biodiversity.
