The Pacific Institute for Sport Education (PISE) is welcoming newcomer families from the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society into the community by offering a free physical literacy enriched session of play on Sunday, Nov. 19.
For those who don’t know, physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life, according to the International Physical Literacy Association.
PISE, a non-profit organization that focuses on building physical literacy in the community, will welcome families to their gymnasium at this closed event from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 19 to join in games and activities that encourage healthy active living.
Stacey Lund, business development manager at PISE, said their goal was to collaborate with another organization that works with families who are newcomers to Canada.
The benefits of attending the event for newcomers, said Lund, are not just the prizes, pizza and refreshments provided by community partners.
“Another great benefit we hope to see are new social connections amongst the families and between our PISE team and the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society. As we know, sport and physical activity can bring people together in wonderful ways,” she said.
Lund hopes it will turn into an annual event shared between the two organizations. She also added that the event is PISE’s way of celebrating Giving Tuesday, an international day of giving created to support charities, which falls on Nov. 28 this year.
“With Giving Tuesday coming up, we wanted to create an event that brings the joy of physical activity to children and their parents and introduce them to the programs that we offer,” she said.
