Waterway trivia, bioblitz event aims to repair damage in Esquimalt Gorge Park

Gorge Waterway Action Society hosts free event Saturday

They say knowledge is power, and those exploring the biodiversity of Esquimalt Gorge Park could earn prizes for the things they learn this weekend.

The Gorge Waterway Action Society hosts its annual Let’s Get Quizzical fundraiser on Saturday, featuring a day of trivia, iNaturalist BioBlitz activities, food and games.

“While the event is free for all to attend, it is also a fundraiser to replace the broken front door shutter at the Gorge Waterway Nature House. The trivia event, which has lots of great prizes, including gift cards to HAVN Saunas, II Terrazzo, Quazar’s Arcade, Axe + Grind, Quest Reality Games, and more, will raise money for the new shutter, and there will be opportunities to make a donation,” said Madilyn Klyne, the society’s education and outreach program lead.

Throughout the day, enjoy lawn games and visit the kids' activity stations between the trivia sessions and nature walks. Grab a tasty treat from Hazel's Ice Cream and a delicious meal from local food trucks, such as Naked Dressing or Greek on the Street. There will be guided plant walks and guided bug walks, and the trivia will be focused on the UN Sustainable Development Goals 13, 14, and 15 (Climate Action, Life Below Water, and Life on Land), and will be family-friendly. Passport to Science will be on hand with hands-on fun, community science and even more prize draws. In the BioBlitz, help catalogue the local flora and fauna of the Gorge Waterway ecosystems using iNaturalist.
