An alternative metal artist has released a new music video filmed in various locations around the North Island.
"After numerous storyline changes, the backdrop of the music video finally landed on using the lush tapestry of forests, natural greenery and earthy tones to formulate the connection of spirit and dreams to the lands we traverse," says Nathan Hutton, who creates music under the name Forgotten Soul. "The trails through Campbell River, Oyster River and Black Creek all made logical sense for their natural beauty and close proximity for filming."
Soul Forgotten released the video for Ascension on Feb. 21. It was filmed in Campbell River, Black Creek, and Oyster River.
Nathan Hutton created Soul Forgotten, a solo alternative metal studio project, in Toronto. However, he has been based out of Campbell River for the past three years.
Hutton says Ascension is a song about coming to terms with losing a loved one.
“Grief is an emotion that doesn’t just stop suddenly. Memories remain. The slightest moment can bring someone you love back into focus, but that doesn’t mean it always has to hurt or be painful. I can think of her and celebrate who my mother was and take solace in knowing that the pain she was in came to an end. She ascended beyond the mortal coil. And I sense she’s now free of the discomfort she was in.”
The video is written and directed by Hutton, who also directed the project's other music video for the song Lillies.
“The more time I spend behind a camera, the more I prefer it over being in front of the lens. I continue to do everything I can to learn about filmmaking and every step required to try and create something that viewers will appreciate. Literally, everything I do with this project is DIY," said Hutton.
Ascension is a single from Soul Forgotten's extended play Matters of Life and Death. It can be streamed on Bandcamp, YouTube and Spotify.
“I’ve been doing this project for a while, and I made the goal to at least put out a full length before I finally call it quits. So that’s on the To Do list now. There will be a few singles and hopefully a few videos down the road as well before I reach my last goal in releasing an LP.”
