The audience is encouraged to wear 3-D glasses while watching Wayne McGregor’s Atomos at the Royal Theatre to appreciate the imagery on the seven 52-inch 3-D video screens that descend from the fly gallery during the show.
Atomos, by Olivier Award-winning British choreographer McGregor, “atomizes” movement, film, sound and light into miniature shards of intense sensation. The work has been dubbed “high tech art” because of McGregor’s creation process using computers and biometric costumes by fashion designers XON. McGregor explains that this may all sound like science, but it actually invites play and openness in the studio.
McGregor’s prolific career includes being the Movement Director on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He recently advised on movement in the Donmar Warehouse’s revival of Closer, has choreographed music videos for Thom Yorke and The Chemical Brothers, and directed the opening sequence for the 2016 Brit Awards. The U.K. choreographer is famous for exploring movement in collaboration not only with his fearless dancers, but also with cognitive scientists, computer wizards, biologists, anthropologists, and literary scholars. For Atomos, McGregor collaborates with lighting designer Lucy Carte, filmmaker Ravi Deepres, and the neo-classical ambient composers A Winged Victory For The Sullen.
Dance Victoria presents Atomos on March 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Royal Theatre. Enjoy a free, pre-show chat at 6:45 p.m. in the West Lobby of the Royal Theatre prior to both performances.
