Award-winning journalist, humour columnist, and managing editor of Boulevard Magazine, Susan Lundy has just released Home on the Strange: Motherhood, Mayhem, and Matters of the Heart, a humorous book of essays.

Home on the Strange draws on columns and stories Lundy wrote over the past 30 years for newspapers and magazines, chronicling her family’s topsy-turvy West Coast life.

“Writing humour columns for various publications over three decades presented me with a treasure trove of memories and anecdotes – many of which may otherwise have been forgotten,” Lundy said in a release.

Home on the Strange is a celebration of the blended family, the chosen family, and matters of the heart. Lundy hopes readers will find the stories relatable as she plucks humour from the ordinary. It expands on the previously published anecdotes, along with new, never-before-seen content woven into a touching and witty book full of love, perseverance, and family. From tales of small-town living, travelling the west coast, hockey antics, and swim meets, to bizarre pets, love lost and found, and an ever-present battered ’78 VW bus.

With the world seeming like a darker and more serious place, Lundy emphasized the need for levity.

“Maybe it’s a good time to share stories that find the humour in simple, everyday life,” she said. “Don’t take life or yourself too seriously. There is a huge joy in learning to laugh at yourself.”

On May 19, Lundy will participate in a virtual author event with the Salt Spring Island Public Library. Details about the event will be posted online at https://saltspring.bc.libraries.coop.
