Surrey's Harj Nagra is making his mark in both music and film.
A music producer and actor, he co-stars in the new Punjabi-language movie Ucha Dar Babe Nanak Da, which opened Friday, July 12, around the world and across Canada, including Surrey's Landmark and Cineplex theatres, with English subtitles.
The family drama, filmed in Surrey and India, "explores the profound journey of discovering true love and the divine presence in our lives."
Nagra co-stars with Dev Kharoud, Monica Gill, Harby Sangha and Yograj Singh.
"My role is quite significant and I'm in quite a lot of scenes," reported Nagra, born in Burnaby and raised in Surrey.
"I also helped compose songs for the film, which is one of the biggest ones I've done so far."
A trailer is posted on Youtube along with Magnet, a song from the film.
Nagra's bio on imdb.com also lists the 2016 movie Love Punjab and Do Dooni Panj, released in 2019.
As the character Gunner, Nagra is also featured in the new action-thriller Ruthless Bastards, starring Sean Patrick Flanery, Casper Van Dien and Indian singer-actor Parmish Verma. The plot follows former partners in crime (Van Dien and Flanery) who reunite for a final mission against a crime boss.
In the music world, Nagra has worked with some big names in the Punjabi industry including Sidhu Moosewala, Karan Aujla, Jazzy B and Sukhshinder Shinda.
"I've got some singles coming out with some artists," Nagra said, "and also I'm working on my own album which features singers like Jazzy B, and I sang a song myself, too, with the rapper The Game, who's big in mainstream hip-hop. He worked with 50 Cent and G-Unit. I'm hoping to release that by next month. I haven't thought of a title yet, that'll be soon."
