Broken Rhythms dancers present Dyana Sonik-Henderson's 'On Hold’ at the McPherson Playhouse April 4.

No one likes being put on hold, but for for the artistic director of a Victoria dance company, a recent experience brought inspiration, in addition to the usual frustration.

“I was on hold for eight hours and I started using the time to think about how we process life’s setbacks and unpack this universal experience of putting our lives on hold,” says Broken Rhythms artistic director Dyana Sonik-Henderson. “Listening to that same song over and over even became funny after awhile.”

The result of that experience is On Hold, the latest production from Broken Rhythms, whose dancers perform the piece on April 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the McPherson Theatre.

Alongside the humour generated by the hours-long stint on hold, Sonik-Henderson's choreography reflects the anxiety, anger, acquiescence and, ultimately, the mutual support everyone needs when lives are put on hold due to various circumstances.

With a rhythmical contemporary style, and often using imaginative props, previous Broken Rhythms performances have included KnottedChiaro:Scuro and 1,000 Pieces of Pi, with each production tackling a different theme or human condition.

Dancers from Victoria Academy of Ballet will also be guest performers, opening the show with a Broken Rhythms repertoire.
