UVic’s Farquhar Auditorium will present Cliff Cardinal’s The Land Acknowledgement on Oct. 10-12 at the Metro Studio Theatre.

The play takes a critical look at the cultural and political practice of land acknowledgements through sharp humour and candid insights. It also offers a thought-provoking commentary on Indigenous and settler relations, encouraging audiences to reflect on the meaning and purpose of land acknowledgements in Canada.

Cardinal, an Indigenous playwright and actor of Cree and Lakota heritage, brings his unique perspective to the production, offering a blend of humour and directness.

Originally premiered by the Crow’s Theatre in Toronto, Ont., The Land Acknowledgement was initially described as a radical retelling of Shakespeare’s As You Like It. The production uses Shakespeare's framework to explore the reconciliation process between Indigenous communities and colonial settlers in Canada. It was praised by The Globe and Mail as “the Canadian arts surprise of the year”.

Known for addressing challenging topics with dark humour and compassion, Cardinal won the 2023 Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama for his play.
