Making a name for yourself as a band in Victoria is no small feat.
Nick Taylor (vocals/guitar) and Dan Turgeon (bass/vocals) slugged away together in three or four bands trying to gain a following. They struck on the right chord, however, when they teamed up with drummer Ethan Horran in late 2008 to form Step Back Dave.
It’s been a steady uphill climb for the indie surf-rock trio since then, playing shows and plugging away on original material.
They took this past winter to focus on writing. Having already released one self-titled EP, the three 20-somethings are set to unveil their newest CD, a five-song compilation of more originals, oddly, also self-titled.
They’ve caught attention for their live shows and their talent for penning tunes. Of late, the folks at The Zone 91.3 latched onto this rising group and made them band of the month for February.
“It’s awesome,” Taylor says of the developments, which includes doing an on-air acoustic set of all-original music on The Zone tomorrow (Feb. 24).
“Up until now we’ve had a following from the shows we’ve done and the friends we have. This will be a great opportunity for people who haven’t heard us before to get a taste of it.”
The boys hit the airwaves starting at 3 p.m.
The plan is to embark on a Western Canadian tour at the end of summer, but they plan to step forward with plenty of local live shows until then.
