Victoria magician pulls silver medal out of his hat at annual convention

Donald Dunphy won a medal for children's entertainment at the 2024 Pacific Coast Association of Magicians convention

At a convention ripe with illusionists, conjurers and prestidigitators, an award-winning Victoria magician was recognized with a medal for his work in children's entertainment.

Victoria's Donald Dunphy was awarded with a silver medal for children's entertainment at the 2024 Pacific Coast Association of Magicians convention, held at the Vic Hotel from Nov. 7 to 10.

"Since the age of 10, [the] professional magician has made the world of magic his home. Donald's interest in magic began a little before then, when he won a magic kit in Cub Scouts, in a contest to find the largest maple leaf. Little did he realize that this symbol of his country would lead to entertaining and enchanting over 4,000 audiences during the next 40-plus years," noted a news release.

Dunphy has previously won the Wansborough Comedy Magic Trophy, awarded by the Victoria Magic Circle, and he holds about 100 performances across B.C. per year at children's birthdays, community events, family events, elementary schools, churches, holiday parties, and more.

The convention featured a number of magic shows and lectures, and they also held competitions in the categories of stage magic, platform magic, comedy magic, mentalism, close-up magic, best assistant, and children's entertainment.
