The Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra’s winter concert under music director Yariv Aloni, features three iconic pieces of music – Mozart’s Don Giovanni: Overture, Copeland’s Four Dances from Rodeo and Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

Known as one of Mozart’s most famous operas, Don Giovanni opens the program before shifting to the lively American West with Copland’s jaunty Four Dances from Rodeo. Closing the afternoon is Elgar’s famous Enigma Variations, known famously for its ninth movement Nimrod and for continuing to puzzle music theorists today with its true Enigma theme.

While the winter concert hits the stage at the University of Victoria, the youth orchestra has a long history of bringing its symphonic sounds to thousands of music lovers, young and old, in diverse communities such as Bamfield, Haida Gwaii, Yukon, and the Kootenays. In rehearsals, sectionals, and workshops, the orchestra’s 60 young musicians explore centuries of symphonic style, develop ensemble and performance skills, and build lasting friendships.

The winter concert is Feb. 9 at 2:30 p.m. in The Farquhar Auditorium at UVic.

Tickets – ranging from $10 to $26 –are available at the UVic Ticket Centre 250-721-8480 or online at uvic.ca/farquhar.
