The Winter Solstice Concert will be well-versed when it descends on Oak Bay.
The concert is presented by Cari Burdett of Lila Music Centre, and long-time collaborator and Fado singer Sara Marreiros and features Adrian Dolan on piano, accordion, and mandolin, and dancer Marisa Jackson.
The multi-genre concert fuses a 12th Century secular canon, a popular French Canadian fiddle tune, Winter themed folk songs, a fierce gospel with the choir, and pop classics by Sting, Gordon Lightfoot, Rose Cousins and more.
This year’s ensemble includes award-winning violinist Quin Etheridge-Pedden. The teen musician is a member of Fiddelium and Canadian Folk Music Award Nominee for 2017.
“I love the idea of having a new, young musician in the show. Quin loves to improvise and his commitment and creative approach to playing the violin is alive and full of youthful joy,” says Burdett. Also new this year is Victoria bassist Nick Mintenko, who is also an incredible songwriter and Adam Dobres, bringing his virtuostic creative approach with his guitar playing.
Each musician will also feature original compositions. Burdett has also invited the Lila Community Choir to perform some of these beautiful folk arrangements and bring in a wealth of vocal harmony to the performances. Created for the delight of all ages, Solstice delights regulars and newcomers alike and sells out each year to much acclaim.
Oak Bay is the third of three locations, three dates to choose from.
Tickets range from $15 in advance to $30 at the door. Donations will be accepted this year for the Witness Project, the creation of Sooke artist Carey Newman (Ha-yalth-kingeme).
