Part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary is set to host its 30th annual native plant sale.
On May 3 and 4 at 3873 Swan Lake Rd., the event will boast a range of native plants the non-profit hopes that, once in the ground, will help restore local ecosystems and promote biodiversity.
"Native plants play a vital role in conserving water, creating habitats for wildlife and fostering biodiversity," the Sanctuary said in a news release. "The native plant sale offers a unique opportunity to purchase rare and hard-to-find species, including those at risk of disappearing from the local landscape. These plants are crucial for sustaining native pollinators and strengthening ecosystems in the face of habitat loss and fragmentation."
Annually, the money raised at the plant sale helps the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary Society support local conservation efforts, including caretaking the local wetland and oak meadows popular with birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
Though the in-person sale is three months away, eager gardeners can take advantage of online preorders until April 1.
“As we celebrate the Nature Sanctuary’s 50th anniversary, it’s inspiring to see the community come together to support biodiversity,” Cara Gibson, Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary's executive director, said in the same news release. “Events like the Native Plant Sale are part of our commitment to empower individuals with the tools to protect local ecosystems for future generations. It’s an inspiring way to reflect on our collective work and look forward to the next 50 years.”
