Victoria teens can now use Uber with new safety controls that put parents in charge.
Starting July 21, Uber’s teen accounts launched in Victoria, letting kids aged 13 to 17 request rides only after their parents approve.
Parents get instant alerts when their teen calls a ride and can watch the trip live in the app. They can contact the driver or teen at any time, and have a direct 911 button for emergencies.
The system comes with mandatory safety features.
Trips record audio from pick up to drop-off, stored securely on the teen’s phone and only accessible if an incident is reported. Teens must use a PIN to verify they’re getting into the right car. RideCheck tracks the trip and flags unusual stops or detours, prompting check-ins with driver and rider.
Only highly rated, experienced drivers can accept teen rides, and they’re notified before accepting. Drivers can opt out of these trips and aren’t allowed to change the drop-off location once the ride starts.
Uber first tested teen accounts in Ontario and Calgary before expanding the program nationwide earlier this year. The Victoria launch marks the program’s arrival on Vancouver Island.
This move aims to give families more control over teen travel, combining convenience with safety in a rideshare world.
