A 5ft long boa was found near a Comox Beach on Thursday (June 26).

Conservation Officers (COS) safely captured a five-foot-long boa constrictor near Comox on Thursday.

The COS received information of a potential large snake on the loose in Miracle Beach Provincial Park. In coordination with BC Parks staff, some trails were cleared of any visitors and temporarily closed. Park visitors were turned away at the trail entrances as officers searched for the snake.

The snake was safely captured at approx. 1 p.m. In consultation with the provincial wildlife veterinarian, it will be transported to the Comox Valley SPCA.

Due to its length, the boa constrictor was determined to be a restricted reptile under the Controlled Alien Species (CAS) regulation, which means that while a permit is not required to own it, they cannot be released under any circumstances. CO’s are investigating the circumstances of this incident, which may result in enforcement action.

The COS does not believe this incident is linked to a boa constrictor recently on the loose in Chesterman Beach in Tofino.

It is not the first time the COS has seized exotic animals – over the last 10+ years, officers have captured lions, alligators and monkeys.

CO’s receive special training to handle the variety of reptiles and exotic animals that fall under CAS.

Controlled Alien Species are not native to BC and are not considered wildlife. The Province regulates all interactions with CAS to ensure public safety.
