The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) is going ahead in November with repairs to Broughton Pier that will help improve the area for pedestrians and business operators.

Supply chain disruptions postponed the $1 million project last winter, which includes replacing 60 original wood piles, some of which are over 100 years old, an upgrade to the area’s sewage system and improved pier lighting.

There will also be a container replacement for Red Fish Blue Fish, one of the popular restaurants in the area. Robert Lewis-Manning, CEO of GVHA, noted in a press release the pier is also home to Victoria Fire Department’s boats, Victoria Kayak Tours and Rentals, has Victoria Harbour Ferry’s pickup and drop off locations, and has marina shower and laundry facilities while connecting the David Foster pathway between the causeway and Hyack Marina.

Considering the area is part of the visitor economy, Lewis-Manning said the PacifiCan Tourism Relief Fund wants to support the area by contributing $500,000 towards repair costs.

GVHA anticipates minor periodic land and water access disruptions for public safety during construction, which is anticipated to be completed by March 2024.

Salish Seas Industrial Services is contracted for construction management and Herold Engineering Ltd. will lead engineering design for the repairs.
