A pair of arson fires are the focus for police and fire departments called out twice within four days to Oak Bay High.

A fire Feb. 7 sent staff and students home early while a second blaze set Feb. 11 cleared the school before classes resumed.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

“These incidents have not been linked; however, it is possible both arson incidents are related,” Oak Bay police said in a news release.

Oak Bay High students wound up with a long weekend after the first fire – the morning of Friday, Feb. 7 – in a boys bathroom sent everyone home early.

The fire was quickly contained to the washroom and no injuries were reported. The forensic section of Saanich police was called in to help with the investigation.

On Tuesday (Feb. 11), just before 9:30 a.m. Oak Bay police and fire were again called to the high school on Cadboro Bay Road after a fire was lit – this time in a girls bathroom.

Staff at the high school quickly extinguished the blaze, police said.

The school was temporarily evacuated after the fire was discovered due to reports of the smell of smoke in a second-floor classroom as the odour circulated through the ventilation system.

Classes resumed when there were no further safety concerns.

Saanich forensics was again called in to help as Oak Bay police investigated the arson.

No arrests have been made. The Oak Bay Police Department asks anyone with information report to the non-emergency line at 250-592-2424 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
