2 kayakers missing off of Central Saanich coast

Pair last known to be paddling to D’Arcy Island Saturday afternoon

A pair of kayakers are missing after the two went for a paddle off of the Central Saanich coast on Saturday afternoon (April 20) and never came back.

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP say 36-year-old Daniel MacAlpine and 26-year old Nicolas West were using a two-person kayak to get from Island View Beach to D’Arcy Island at around 2:15 p.m. They haven’t been heard from since.

Members of the RCMP detachment, as well as the Central Saanich Police Department, PEMO Search and Rescue, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and the Canadian Coast have been searching for the two men, but haven’t found them as of Sunday afternoon.

RCMP say the pair were using a teal blue fibreglass, two-person kayak.

MacAlpine is described as a 5’10”, 150-pound Caucasian man. West is described as a 6’5”, 170-pound Caucasian man.
