Bazan Bay 5k coming to Sidney April 8

Final race in the Island Series; Prairie Inn Harriers sit in third place overall

SIDNEY — Runners will flock to Sidney and North Saanich on April 8 for the final event of the 2018 Vancouver Island Race Series.

The Bazan Bay 5K, sponsored by Synergy Health Management, marks the conclusion of the Island Race Series. It’s the eighth race in a series that started January 7 in North Saanich with the Pioneer 8K. Subsequent events were held in cobble hill, Cedar, Royal Roads, Port Alberni, Courtenay and Sooke.

Described as a very fast course, the Bazan Bay 5K goes along Lochside Drive, starting and ending out front of Tulista Park.

It’s the final event where runners and their teams can earn points, helping them reach the pinnacle of this year’s Series.

Currently, prior to this weekend’s TriStarsSooke 10K, Nanaimo’s Bastion Run Club leads among the teams with 2,207 points. Ceevacs Roadrunners from the Cowichan Valley sit in second with 2,114 points and the Prairie Inn Harriers of Saanichton sit in third at 1,914 points.

The Harriers finished the 2017 Series in first place with 2,902 points. Bastion has made a big jump from fourth place least season, to first place in 2018.

Following the April 8 race, Island Race Series awards will be handed out. Medals will be presented to the top 10 runners in each age category. Trophies will go to the overall top female and male racers and the top male and female masters (over 40) runners.
