The WSANEC First Nation is preparing to host the 30th annual Sampson Family Intertribal, ‘Honouring WƏTANMY Powwow,’ a vibrant three-day celebration of culture, dance and community from July 25 to 27.

The powwow, a public event open to all, will take place outdoors in the field behind the LAU, WELNEW Tribal School at 7449 West Saanich Rd.

Organized by the descendants of Alice “Wətanmy” Sampson, the annual event honours her legacy and provides an opportunity to share WSANEC traditions with the wider community.

Attendees can expect captivating dance performances, engaging cultural activities and a welcoming atmosphere.

The Sampson family expressed their hopes that visitors will gain a deeper understanding of their way of life and cultural practices.

"As we welcome you into our WSANEC First Nation’s territory and into our powwow circle, we will share just a small portion of what our Mother passed on to us," they stated on the event's online page

Due to limited parking, organizers are encouraging attendees to carpool or utilize public transportation.

Bus routes 83, 81, and 75 provide access to the venue. Route 83 stops right outside the school while routes 81 and 75 are a short 10-15-minute walk away.
