'EVan', a new electric vehicle at Camosun College, is driving education into the future through hands-on student experience in growing trades.
“This van is designed to help us stay ahead of the curve in ever-evolving industries, equipping students with the skills, experience, and real-world exposure needed to thrive in the future of trades,” said Brian Coey, chair of trades development, speaking about the school's new BrightDrop Zevo 400. “We’re excited to provide students with the relevant skills for an electrified future.”
The college took advantage of a federal and provincial rebate to purchase the all-purpose, walk-in van. It's expected to be a versatile tool for training across multiple trades, including carpentry, pipe trades, sheet metal and welding. It will also lead the delivery of electric vehicles in automotive apprentice training, specifically in heavy-duty automotive trades, and help deliver education in a more "compact and efficient manner."
“We’ll deliver mobile trades training to anyone who would like it,” said Coey. “It’s usually been local middle and high schools for a day or so of hands-on exposure and activities.”
