Capital Regional District begins solid waste research and engagement survey

As a part of the its solid waste management plan, the district hopes survey results will help it identify better ways to reduce Greater Victoria waste

Over the next month, the Capital Regional District (CRD) will send surveys to randomly selected residents and business owners in Greater Victoria to gauge how they feel about its current waste-reduction practices.

This project is part of the CRD’s solid waste management plan, which the district created to help reduce the amount of compostable material, recyclables and garbage that end up in the Hartland Landfill by one-third.

Corporate communications manager Andy Orr said this goal will help extend the life of the landfill. It will also bring the district closer to the province's per capita waste disposal target of 125 kg per year.

Orr recognizes that the CRD has a lot of work to do if it wants to achieve these lofty targets.

"CRD's solid waste management plan sets a 10-year per capita disposal target of 250 kg per person per year or less by 2031," he said. "In 2023, the per capita disposal rate was 382 kg per person."

The results of these surveys will help the CRD create programs, like promotional campaigns and workshops, that encourage waste reduction.

Selected residents and business owners will receive a survey during one of the following periods:

  • Resident survey: Jul. 17 – Aug. 14;
  • Business survey: Jul. 17 – Aug. 14;
  • Hartland public drop-off depot survey: Jul. 24 – Aug. 21.
